Not Your Typical Workamping Job

This week’s blog is from Workamper Lee & Beth Holt. They submitted their story to be published in our magazine a while back, but it just didn’t make it. It’s not any ordinary Workamping job and plus…it looks really fun!

We had the pleasure of being the only workampers to help Arthur and Marilyn Oakes at their rustic and beautiful  Buffalo Rock Lodge Bed and Breakfast outside of Keystone, in the amazing Black Hills of South Dakota. It was our first Workamping experience that spoiled us and set the bar real high for any future positions.

Our 5th wheel was situated below the lodge and our front patio had an amazing view of a cleared glen where we watched deer, rabbits, and wild turkeys. We had water, electricity, sewer hookup and even satellite TV; the Oakes had thought of everything an RVer would need. We were also given a VIP pass which entitled us to free or discounted admission to over 100 attractions/things to do in the Black Hills area.

The lodge has three bedrooms for guests and our duties were to clean and service the rooms on their departure and also clean the common use areas.  The guests were required to stay a minimum of three-days  (to fully enjoy the area and all it has to offer), so we seldom had all three rooms to get ready on the same day. Together we worked no more than 24-hours a week which gave us ample time to explore the amazing Black Hills, other parts of South Dakota and also travel into Wyoming, North Dakota, and Nebraska.

Marilyn Oakes is the granddaughter of C.C. Gideon, who along with Peter Norbeck, rode on horseback and laid out the highways throughout Custer State Park and the Keystone area for the amazing views of Mount Rushmore and the surrounding mountains. Mr. Gideon also designed and built the historic Pigtail Bridges and he and his wife were the builders and caretakers of the Game Lodge in Custer State Park. Marilyn grew up in the area with her grandparents so her knowledge of the area and her experiences are shared with the guests who visit from all over the world.

Thanks to Facebook and email we continue to be a part of this family and visit as often as we can. It was a wonderful Workamping experience and we strongly encourage everyone to consider working at one of the many B and B’s in the Rapid City/Keystone area.

Life is Good. Do what you like; like what you do.
